Learn

New to chess, or looking to get better? Here is where to start.

  • Learn the rules. Free online lessons from Lichess (non-profit) or Chess.com (commercial) will teach you the basics. For children, ChessKid has a beginner's guide to chess.
  • Practice. Playing online on sites like Lichess or ChessKid matches you against players at your level. Students can join the KCA's club on ChessKid, where we run regular online tournaments.
  • Play in person. Visit one of the chess clubs around the state, or join your school's chess club.
  • Keep improving. Our learning resources list training tools, videos and other sites our members have found useful.

Once you know the rules, the best way to improve is to play in tournaments. Most Kentucky tournaments welcome beginners; see the scholastic and open tournament calendars.
