KY Chess wants every student who wants to play to be able to. Students who attend any of the schools below can enter KY Chess scholastic championships for free. Each tournament’s listing explains how to claim the scholarship when you register.
A school is on this list if 70% or more of its students are economically disadvantaged, according to the Kentucky Department of Education’s 2025-26 school data. There are 614 of them, in 140 districts.
School not listed? If a student can’t afford to play, email our scholastic director at [email protected]. We will make sure any student who wants to play in KY Chess tournaments can. Coaches at Title I schools can also ask about free boards and US Chess memberships; see the Coaches & Chess Sponsors page.
